After completing a degree in architecture at Cornell University, Matta-Clark returned to his home city of New York, where he initiated a series of site-specific works in derelict areas of the South Bronx. The borough's many abandoned buildings, the result of economic decline and middle-class flight, served as Matta-Clark's raw material. His series 'Bronx Floors' dissected these structures, performing an anatomical study of ther ravaged urban landscape. Moving from New York to Paris with 'Conical Interserct', a piece that became emblematic of artistic protest, Matta-Clark applied this same method to a pair of seventeenth-century row houses slatted for demolition as a result of the Centre Pompidou's construction. This compelling volume grounds Matta-Clark's practice against the framework of architectural and urban history, stressing his pioneering activist-inspired approach, as well as his contribution to the nascent fields of social practice and relational aesthetics." Michel Sittow : Estonian painter at the courts of Renaissance Europe by John Oliver Hand( Book )5 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 198 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Michel Sittow (c. 1469-1525) was the greatest Estonian artist of the Renaissance. As his renown as a portraitist spread among the royal courts of Europe in the late fifteenth century, Sittow led the life of the itinerant artist, leaving his native Reval, the Hanseatic port city known today as Tallinn, to reside at courts in Spain, The Netherlands, and Denmark. Michel Sittow: Estonian Painter at the Courts of Renaissance Europe is the first monographic exhibit of this masterful artist's oeuvre. The 144-page catalog with 90 illustrations features rare paintings by Sittow and other art works by his contemporaries, along with insightful essays by leading European and American scholars including John Oliver Hand of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and Greta Koppel of the Art Museum of Estonia, Tallinn.--Provided by publisher Gateways : art and networked culture = Kunst und vernetzte Kultur ( Book )3 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide The desire for freedom : art in Europe since 1945 : 30th Council of Europe exhibition by Council of Europe( Book )2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 72 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Verführung Freiheit : Kunst in Europa seit 1945 : XXX. The exhibition assumes that art can offer impulses and inspire reflection on participation and the power of agency. Invited are artists whose practice is based on the exploration of their social environment. The artists deal with diverse thematic fields such as migration politics, ideas of “normality” and “differentness,” the mechanisms of understanding and misunderstanding, social fears, young people’s various perspectives and concepts of life; the media’s influence on perception, thought, and knowledge; the relation between consumer culture and nature; or the sentimental value of the commonplace. What unites the works is a positive and often humorous prevailing mood that makes the observer want to engage in something new and scrutinize his or her own patterns of perception and thought."--Exhibition website Eesti Kunstimuuseumi toimetised = Schriften des Estnischen Kunstmuseums = Proceedings of the Art Museum of Estonia by Estonia) Kumu kunstimuuseum (Tallinn( ) in German and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide I love Malmö : Põhjamaade kaasaegse kunsti näitus Malmö kunstimuuseumi kogudest : an exhibition of Nordic contemporary art from the collections of the Malmö Art Museum ( Book )1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Filonov : vene avangard ja järgnenu = Filonov : the Russian avant-garde and afterwards = Filonov : russkiĭ avangard i posle by Pavel Nikolaevich Filonov( Book )3 editions published in 2011 in Estonian and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Tõnis Vint ja tema esteetiline universum = Tõnis Vint and his aesthetic universe ( Book )3 editions published in 2012 in Estonian and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Kunstirevolutsioon 1966 = Art revolution 1966 by Anu Allas( Book )2 editions published in 2015 in Estonian and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Force majeure : Eesti kunsti hävimis- ja kadumislood by Liis Pählapuu( Book )2 editions published in 2016 in Estonian and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Ars Fennica 2008 : Maria Duncker, Tea Mäkipää, Katrīna Neiburga, Mark Raidpere, Seppo Renvall by Kirsti Karvonen( Book )3 editions published in 2008 in Finnish and English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Jüri Okas by Jüri Okas( Book )1 edition published in 2017 in Estonian and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Jüri Okas is seen as iconic both in architecture ? as a member of the Tallinn School and the founder of the architecture bureau J. Okas & M. Lõoke ? and in fine art. Okas?s artistic activity had its beginnings in the 1970s and he has produced work in a wide range of media: happenings, land art, film, photography, and prints from photographs and films. By distancing himself from the officially approved Soviet ideology and being in a complex dialogue with the Western avant-garde, Okas became one of the most fascinating contemporary artists in Estonia. His keen sense of observation and conceptual treatment of space have never ceased to intrigue researchers and critics of different generations.00Two complementary studies are included in the book. Dr. Sirje Helme, a contemporary of Jüri Okas and a long-time interpreter of his work, looks at the considerable gap between young art of the 1970s and the language used by critics to interpret it, claiming that this did not help to prepare the ground for conceptual art, and that Jüri Okas stood quite alone. Dr Andres Kurg, in his article, analyses the in-betweenness of Okas?s visual art, which is expressed by the recurrent motifs of buildings falling into disrepair or being under construction, of walls descending or ascending.00The artist and architect Jüri Okas has contributed a great deal to the exhibition and the book, and the conceptual clarity and refined aesthetics of his work will definitely dictate the form and ways of its reception.00Exhibition: Kumu Art Museum, Tallinn, Estonia (07.04.?27.08.2017).0 Külm pilk : hüpeerrealismi variatsioonid eesti kunstis = Cold look : variations of hyperrealism in Estonian art ( Book )1 edition published in 2016 in Estonian and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Värvide dirigendid : muusika ja modernsus Eesti kunstis = Conductors of colour : music and modernity in Estonian art by Bart Pushaw( Book )2 editions published in 2016 in Estonian and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide From the first song festival through the Singing Revolution and beyond, music has played a fundamental role in Estonian history, culture and identity. But if every bird has its own song, as the Estonian saying goes, what of the artist? What is the role of the painter in a society of "singing people"? This exhibition explores such questions, revealing how music and sound --from the ancient strumming of Vanemuine's golden kannel and chants of regilaulud to the modern clatter of cafés and the abstraction of the Jazz Age -- have transformed modern visual culture in Estonia Metafora i mit : motywy literackie i historyczne w sztuce polskiej przełomu XIX i XX wieku = Metaphor and myth : literary and historical motifs in Polish art at the turn of the 19th century ( Book )3 editions published in 2007 in Polish and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide  moreShow More Titles fewerShow Fewer Titles Audience Level
