Main page translations don't show 5 comments • 21:18, 26 May 2020 4 days ago 5 History Permalink Sycaton ( talk contribs )

The Main page template is used with the parameter 1 set to en which prevents translated content from being shown on the Main Page. The parameter should be removed. (Invalid parameters will lead to the page being shown in English, so there wouldn't be a resulting problem.)

I note that you performed that exact opposite edit at Template talk:Main page#Display preferred language due to a request by Wargo . A decision should be made here, rather than there being hodgepodge oscillations at the request of individual users.

The edit at MediaWiki was wrong and unrelated to the request. At that time I should do this edit at Template:Main page .

Is there a good convincing reason as to why the latest stable builds are no longer listed on mediawiki wiki's main page?

05:48, 27 April 2019 1 year ago Permalink AKlapper (WMF) ( talk contribs )

Why is it important to you to see the specific numbers of the latest stable builds on the main page?

19:46, 27 April 2019 1 year ago Permalink Lyrixn ( talk contribs )

It was both convenient to download and track the latest stable and LTS builds. By the way I'm talking about this box: https://i.imgur.com/7WNmVzY.png that was still there not long ago (a few months ago at most).

05:47, 28 April 2019 1 year ago Permalink AKlapper (WMF) ( talk contribs )

If you want to download and track latest builds, feel free to bookmark Download .

I see no reason for such information to waste space on the front page. See "If people want to download MediaWiki they should go to the Download page" on MediaWiki/Homepage improvements 2018 .

07:50, 28 April 2019 1 year ago Permalink Lyrixn ( talk contribs )

Who decides what wastes space on the main page and what doesn't? Was there a discussion where the majority agreed that the box that's been there for years is no longer relevant? All I see on the project you linked that it was decided (probably by you) that the box should be removed and that's that. The discussion page on that same project has little to no reference or actual discussion on this topic.

I quote from the source you linked: "I doubt anyone informs themselves about a need for an upgrade of their installation by visiting the front page and then manually comparing with their version."

"I doubt" - you doubt so that automatically means that no one does that. Well I did exactly that and I'm more than confident that there were a lot of people who did exactly that as well, but obviously they aren't being so vocal about it. For most of the people this wiki is a resource for the software.

08:37, 28 April 2019 1 year ago Permalink AKlapper (WMF) ( talk contribs )

@ Lyrixn : Sure there was. See the three "Announcements / call for comments" sections on MediaWiki/Homepage improvements 2018 how you could have gotten aware.

09:00, 28 April 2019 1 year ago Permalink Lyrixn ( talk contribs )

I do see you being the only participant in these, unless I'm missing something.

09:17, 28 April 2019 1 year ago Permalink AKlapper (WMF) ( talk contribs )

If that was true (it is not), what would be the problem with that? Nobody can force anyone to take part in discussions...

The discussions can be found in Talk:MediaWiki/Homepage improvements 2018 and Talk:MediaWiki/Homepage improvements 2018/Proposal as linked from the three "call for comments" sections that I already linked in my previous comment. Anyone interested was welcome to provide input.

I'm not sure I totally understand but if I do, then you're asking for what is in the "News" card in https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki ? I do see latest stable builds/releases of MW on the "News" card, which if you click on "more news", you'll be taken to: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/News .

Does that help? Thanks!

I have the following table on my corp wiki - use the source editor to actually read it:

{{#get_web_data:url= https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&meta=siteinfo&format=json |format=JSON |data=wp_servername=servername,wp_generator=generator |cache seconds=21600}} {{#get_web_data:url= https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&meta=siteinfo&format=json |format=JSON |data=mw_servername=servername,mw_generator=generator |cache seconds=21600}}
{{#external_value:mw_servername}} : {{#external_value:mw_generator}} {{#external_value:wp_servername}} : {{#external_value:wp_generator}} www.mediawiki.org : 1.35.0-wmf.30 (765c95b)

It might come in handy.

I have some suggestions of minor changes to the frontpage:

https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=User:JCrespo_(WMF)/main_page&type=revision&diff=3550799&oldid=3550760

Mine are not that great, and very open to discussion, but I think it improves a bit the searching of information (what I think is important can be certainly argued against, and I may be showing my biases, despite trying to think on "new users first"). As a problem I had, I tried to look for "how to start coding?" link and was unable to find it, despite knowing it was here.

CC @AKlapper (WMF).

Edited 15:30, 2 December 2019 5 months ago Permalink AKlapper (WMF) ( talk contribs )

@ JCrespo (WMF) : Thanks! I can offer my feedback but note that I don't see myself as some gatekeeper or maintainer here. I agree with nearly all changes, except for the last one where I'm not sure if "How to start contributing to Wikimedia" is more guiding: My main intention might not be to "contribute" something, but to get hands on some code and find a project for that. ("Contribute" always felt vague to me as it can mean so many things - contribute food? thoughts? money? code?)

16:22, 2 December 2019 5 months ago Permalink AKlapper (WMF) ( talk contribs )

(Oh wait, I realize that maybe editing that page requires some special permissions maybe?)

23:12, 2 December 2019 5 months ago Permalink JCrespo (WMF) ( talk contribs )

> requires some special permissions maybe

Indeed it does, I cannot edit it directly.

> Choose a software project to hack on

That is confusing to me. I agree my suggestion is not ok either. I would be happy to have a better 3 option. Something in the vein of "Start coding <something>" or something that doesn't include "hack" (no problem for me with it, but I think its confusing for newcomers) and that is not "choose", something more explicit in a couple of words.

14:11, 3 December 2019 5 months ago Permalink AKlapper (WMF) ( talk contribs )

@ JCrespo (WMF) "Start working on the code of a project", maybe? (I don't dare currently to make the other edits because as usual, I don't understand all that <translate> markup, sigh.)

"Start coding for a Wikimedia project"? (shorter)

16:49, 3 December 2019 5 months ago Permalink Quiddity (WMF) ( talk contribs )

I've added the bolding and the link-label change.

However changing the 3 "Learn ..." links is much more complicated, because currently the existing translations are embedded within link-syntax, hence if we did something like this , then the previously translated text would end up without any links until a translator noticed the problem (in each language). [IIUC]. -- It's especially problematic here because the system doesn't seem to be rendering the pink-background color for outdated sections, as it's meant to.

18:50, 3 December 2019 5 months ago Permalink AKlapper (WMF) ( talk contribs )

Thanks for your help, Quiddity! (And JCrespo for the improvements!)

If we have a good big download button on the home page to download mediawiki then that will be better. The link is OK. But If we can have a button then it is great.

02:01, 4 October 2019 7 months ago Permalink AKlapper (WMF) ( talk contribs )

@ Ranjithsiji : No I disagree. Most people do not come for "downloading". No problem is solved if you click a big download button and then cannot find what to do with that downloaded file.

07:51, 4 October 2019 7 months ago Permalink Ranjithsiji ( talk contribs )

@ AKlapper (WMF) I think the primary subject of this website is mediawiki. That is why I suggested this. I completely agree with you that most people may not here for downloading. But I think that the main subject of this website is to popularize or solve problems related to mediawiki. So in the first point download must be notable. One more the download button must not start the download instantly instead redirect it to the download and install instructions page.

Somebody added the "Other languages" section to show also at the top of translated pages. Now it shows at the top and the bottom. I think it should be removed from the top since it is duplicated content and not very good for people who access via mobile devices.

sorry, for practicality I created a new topic.

as the title suggests, much clearer than before, I would be interested in understanding how and where to request activation of the Jmol extension, existing on mediawiki, for wikipedia pages.

(For context: Topic:Vb83qxm6k4e8u5gh ). See the open dependency tasks to fix in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T45616 and/or previous discussion in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T18491 . See How to become a MediaWiki hacker if you would like to work on code. See Bug management/Development prioritization for general information.

21:37, 18 November 2019 6 months ago Permalink Griot Matteo ( talk contribs )

once again, I'm sorry, unfortunately I'm new to the whole platform with regards to these things.

If I didn't understand it I would have to ask in the already opened tasks to see if you can already integrate the 3D visualization of jmol in the wikipedia pages, right?

I ask only because when I looked at mediawiki I found that the Jmol extension already exists ( Extension:Jmol ).

Sorry for all these questions but you are the only one available to explain things for a moment and give me useful links.

08:53, 19 November 2019 6 months ago Permalink AKlapper (WMF) ( talk contribs )

There is no need to ask in opened tasks, as they are "open" (and not "resolved") for a reason: They are not resolved so you cannot already integrate the 3D visualization of jmol in Wikipedia pages.   :)

I was not aware of https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Jmol , thanks for sharing that! See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Review_queue for the steps required if you would like to see that Jmol extension available on Wikimedia websites such as Wikipedia.

11:14, 19 November 2019 6 months ago Permalink Griot Matteo ( talk contribs )

I readen the page Review queue but I didn't found in any part of this how I can ask for see that Jmol extension avaiable on Wikipedia.

If I'm not mistaken, only the creator has the right to make those steps for the request.

what should I do then?

Thanks in advance

I was wondering if in the wikipedia pages related to chemistry, talking about orbitals, molecules and c ... we could add the 3D model of the subject of the page. I refer to integrating the jmol file / script into wikipedia pages to freely display a molecule, an orbital and so on in 3 dimensions.
